Background
M.A. Social Anthropology, University of Durham; Ph.D. Sociology, University of Manchester. Social anthropologist who specialises in development sociology. He has extensive fieldwork experience in Latin America, Europe, and Africa. Methodologically he has contributed to the development of an actor-oriented approach. He supervises a large number of MSc and PhD research projects and is a member of the Dutch Academic Board of the Centre for Latin American Studies (CEDLA) in the Netherlands. He manages the rural development section of an inter-university project (PROMEC), based at the University of San Simon in Bolivia for NUFFIC (Dutch University Foundation for International Cooperation).

Research
Research interests
Research interests include: the changing relations between state and rural producers, issues of policy and project implementation, the globalisation of food processes, social valuation, environmental controversies, sustainable rural livelihoods, and the re-ordering of rural space.
