MSc and PhD in Rural Development Sociology from Wageningen University, The Netherlands. His interests lie in the broader field of rural development in both Latin America and West Africa, with a special focus on agro-food studies and people-environment interactions.

Research
Within then theme agro-food studies emphasis is placed on the implications of debates over GM food crops, food safety, the revalorization of local landraces and local knowledge, the globalization of scientific agricultural knowledge, the effects of standards and grades on relationships within the food chain, and innovation processes. Research on people-environment interactions includes community-based conservation, local ecological knowledge, human adaptation to the environment, and the interaction between policy and the management of natural resources.

Teaching
He is presently co-ordinator of the education programme of the Rural Development Sociology Group and convenor of CERES Working Programme 2 Rural Transformations.
